The Dream of an International Airport in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK)

Why doesn’t AJK have an international airport? What’s stopping its development? Let’s explore this important topic.

Introduction: AJK’s Untapped Potential

Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) is a region known for its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and welcoming people. However, when it comes to air travel, AJK remains disconnected. There is no international airport, and even the existing domestic airports are barely operational.

So, why is AJK still waiting for an airport? Is it a technical limitation, a political decision, or a lack of planning? Let’s find out.

Why Doesn’t AJK Have an International Airport?

A significant obstacle is the 100-nautical-mile rule, which requires a minimum distance between two international airports.

Since Islamabad International Airport is nearby, constructing an international airport in AJK isn’t feasible. However, the good news is that a domestic airport is a real possibility.

👉 Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq recently acknowledged this issue and emphasized that while an international airport may not be possible, a domestic airport can be considered.

Possible Solution: Domestic Airport in AJK

A domestic airport could be a game-changer for AJK, allowing:

✅ Better connectivity for local travelers

✅ Economic growth through tourism and trade

✅ Emergency medical and disaster relief flights

Mirpur & Bhimber: The Best Locations for an Airport

The Prime Minister specifically mentioned Mirpur and Bhimber as ideal locations. But why these two cities?

1. Geographical Advantage

Both Mirpur and Bhimber have relatively flat terrain, making them perfect for airport construction.

📍 Mirpur’s elevation: 377 meters

📍 Bhimber’s elevation: 378 meters

Compare this to Muzaffarabad or Rawalakot, where the mountainous landscape makes airport construction more difficult and expensive.

2. Economic & Strategic Importance

✅ Close proximity to Punjab, increasing potential passenger traffic

✅ Opportunities for trade and tourism growth

✅ Easy access for international travelers via road connections

🚀 A domestic airport in Mirpur or Bhimber wouldn’t just benefit AJK— it would also serve travelers from nearby areas in Pakistan.

Current State of Airports in AJK

While AJK technically has airports, their functionality is extremely limited:

✈️ Muzaffarabad Airport – Only used for emergency landings.

✈️ Rawalakot Airport – Not suitable for commercial flights.

❌ No airports in Mirpur or Bhimber – The region has no air connectivity at all.

📌 If a new airport is planned, it will have to be built entirely from scratch.

Can AJK Learn from Gilgit & Skardu?

Pakistan’s other mountainous regions, such as Gilgit and Skardu, already have successful domestic airports.

✈️ Gilgit Airport – Handles daily domestic flights despite the difficult terrain.

✈️ Skardu Airport – Now upgraded to handle international flights!

💡 If Gilgit and Skardu can have functional airports, why not AJK?

Wouldn’t a similar model work for Mirpur or Bhimber?

This raises a crucial question: Is AJK being overlooked in air infrastructure development?

The Future: Can AJK’s Airport Dream Become Reality?

In 2019, the people of Mirpur passed a resolution demanding an airport.

🚧 But for dreams to become reality, we need:

✔ Government commitment

✔ Investment in infrastructure

✔ Public and private sector collaboration

✅ If a domestic airport is built in Mirpur or Bhimber, it could be upgraded to international standards later.
